Application of HDR to Underground Photography

This is a proof of concept seeking to determine if the tools and techniques developed for the "Kings Landing Home & School Companion" can be applied to mining. The specific technique being tested was the use of Synthetic High Dynamic Range (SHDR) photography to overcome difficult lighting conditions, such as those that abound underground.

These photographs were taken during a short visit to the potash mine at Sussex, NB, Canada, on 14 Jan 09 and were taken using only the available light. I am grateful to the staff of the mine for their enthusiasm and hospitality.

The reader is reminded that these photos are only proof of concept. Photos acquired during a dedicated session would be free of such artifacts as moving people blurs and the errant flashes of lamps. Also, there would likely be far less particulate matter in the air during a dedicated shoot.
